Walk into any flooring store and you will hear two pitches: tile people swear by porcelain, and the vinyl aisle promises waterproof everything at half the price. Both can work in a bathroom, but they fail in different ways, and Texas humidity punishes the wrong choice. Here is how we advise Plano homeowners when they ask.
Porcelain Tile: The Gold Standard
Porcelain is essentially waterproof, shrugs off standing water, and lasts decades when installed over a proper substrate. It stays cool underfoot, which most Texans appreciate nine months of the year, and it handles steam, splashes, and mopping without complaint.
The trade-offs are cost and comfort. Tile installation runs significantly higher than LVP because of the labor: substrate prep, mortar, grout, and sealing. It is also hard and cold in winter, though a bath mat solves most of that. Luxury Vinyl Plank: The Practical Challenger
Modern LVP with a stone-plastic composite (SPC) core is 100 percent waterproof, warmer and softer underfoot than tile, and installs faster, which keeps labor costs down. For a powder room or a kids' bathroom on a budget, it is a legitimate option.
The downsides show up over time. LVP can dent under heavy vanities, sharp grit can scratch the wear layer, and in extreme heat the planks can expand and lift at the seams. Expect 10 to 20 years of service versus decades from tile. And it should never go inside a shower pan area, no matter what the box claims.
The Texas Humidity Factor
North Texas humidity is the real test. Tile with epoxy grout is the most mold-resistant combination you can put on a bathroom floor; there is simply nothing organic for mold to eat. LVP performs fine too, but only over a properly prepped, dry subfloor. Trapped moisture under vinyl is a mold farm waiting to happen.

Our Recommendation
For full bathrooms and anywhere near the shower or tub, choose porcelain tile. The upfront cost buys you decades of trouble-free service. For a half bath or powder room on a concrete slab, quality SPC vinyl is a reasonable way to save money without meaningful risk.
